Mac storage full? What takes the space and what you can do.

Short answer: System Settings shows what takes the space. If most of it is your own projects and archives, the quick fixes only go so far, and the real choice is where those files live.

Apple facts checked on October 26, 2026 against Apple’s documentation for macOS 27.

See what takes the space

  1. Open Storage settings. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, click General in the sidebar, then click Storage.
  2. Read the bar. Each color is a category, such as Applications, Documents or System Data. Hold the pointer over a color to see its size.
  3. Open Documents. Click its Info button to see large files and downloads, and sort them by size.

System Data is mostly files macOS uses, such as logs, caches and virtual memory files. You can’t manage it in Storage settings: macOS does, and its size changes with what your Mac is doing.

Why “available” isn’t always free

Disk Utility can count purgeable space as available. Apple describes it as space macOS can free up when needed by removing files, and you can’t remove those files yourself. When space runs low, macOS also clears caches and logs that are safe to delete. So the available figure can be larger than the space that’s free right now.

Try the quick fixes first

Back up first. Once the Trash is emptied, deleted files can’t be brought back. Back up with Time Machine.

  • Review the recommendations in Storage settings: Store in iCloud, Optimize Storage and Empty Trash automatically. Empty Trash automatically erases items after 30 days in the Trash.
  • Delete apps you no longer use, old iPhone or iPad backups, and media you can download again.
  • Empty the Trash. Space from deleted files comes back only after that.

Apple’s full list of steps covers more, such as Mail and other users’ files.

When the files are the work

If the space is your own project folders and archives, there’s nothing safe to clean. These are the options, with what each costs and where it falls short.

Common questions

Why is my Mac storage still full after deleting files?

Deleted files keep their space until you empty the Trash. The available figure can also include purgeable space, which macOS frees only when it needs it.

What is System Data on a Mac?

Files the system uses, such as logs, caches and virtual memory files, plus temporary files, fonts and app support files. macOS manages them, and the size changes with what your Mac is doing.

Is it safe to delete files when my Mac is full?

Only what you’ve backed up or know you won’t need. Emptying the Trash can’t be undone, and Empty Trash automatically erases items after 30 days.

Do online‑only files use space on my Mac?

Dropbox says an online‑only file uses only a small placeholder until you open it. Then it downloads and stays available offline. iCloud Drive with Optimize Mac Storage moves files off your Mac only when space is needed.
